It’s a natural phase in the aging of our civilization. The conservatives can’t grow the pie in this global labor market. Imperialism is alive and well, but, it ain’t what it used to be. At least not for our standard of living, perhaps our state is doing fine. The entire healthcare cost problem could be solved by importing migrant Indian doctors, and the Phillipines is renowned for it’s affordable nurses. But, a little thing like “nationalism” gets in the way, not to mention special interests. Didn’t Galbraith say that re-distribution is worth wastefulness? As more and more people lose hope of living better than their parents, they’ll take their slice upfront, even if it’s wasteful. Do you really blame them? How could anything natural be bad? I mean, you’re right, this disrupt the republic. But, who says that’s a bad thing?
